Name: Benjamin "Benjy" Arthur Earthlore Fenwick PB: Joe Edney Age: 16 / May 15th Year: 6th House: Gryffindor Bloodline: Muggleborn Wand: 13 inch, very swishy; made of rowan and cored with a Sphinx's mane hair. He waves it with the enthusiasm and fluid grace of a symphony conductor.
Detailed Appearance Body- Benjy is a physically unimpressive boy of average build and slightly above normal height. His body is pretty underdefined in muscularity and has a very linear shape. He is fairskinned, with light freckling on the bridge of his nose and on his shoulders. He doesn't really tan, he just burns. He has sloping but average sized shoulders but thin arms, very little rise to his underdeveloped pecs and a featureless expanse of a stomach that looks almost feminine. His forearms are very lightly dusted with brown hair but his legs are very hairy. At sixteen he has past-peach fuzz but not quite true hair that grows on his lip and on his chin, but not really his cheeks yet. He shaves it. Benjy's skin is pretty sensitive and fair. He's a typical teen in that he has the occasional zit. He also has a birthmark that he doesn't like people to see, because in the conclaves and schools where he grew up, he got the nickname "Spotty."
Face- Benjy's hair is chestnut brown and he doesn't do much with it. Normally its straight-running and sort of limp, but when the humidity jumps his hair gets wavier. He doesn't consistently wash it day to day so its sometimes greasy. His hair is long enough to mostly obscure his ears, which he likes because he thinks his ears stick out and look funny. His bangs skirt over his eyes. His nose is average-sized and runs a straight path from bridge to tip. Its pretty narrow. He has a squared jaw and chin. His mouth is small, full and oval-shaped. His lips are usually chapped because he bites them so much. One of Benjy's most attractive features are his watery blue eyes, which are only marred in beauty by his tendency to look a little tired. In face he isn't unattractive but he isn't dead sexy either.
Dress- Benjy dresses in primarily Muggle fashion and he doesn't dress to impress. His clothes are mostly relaxed. He doesn't have great fashion sense though.
Presentation- Benjy is a low-key, relaxed type of guy that isn't imposing or upfront in how he carries himself. He slumps a little when he sits and he has a little bit of a swishy walk. He doesn't wear deodorant so he either smells like nothing, or has that slightly musky, cheddary scent a boy's body will have just before it turns rank. He has a soft-spoken, very thick Welsh drawl and sometimes curses in Welsh or Hindi under his breath. When he gets very upset and his temper flares, he can be a whirlwind. His eyes turn from a blue to an icy grey. But most of the time, Benjy looks "safe and nonthreatening" but there are times he looks a little sad too. Detailed Personality Benjy's gentle, friendly, polite.... just a pretty nice boy all around. He is not shy but he isn't the life of the party either. He just rests somewhere in the middle of it all. He's not a born leader but he isn't a blind follower. He will use initiative if none exists but he is just as quick to relinquish his power when its done. He is extremely loyal and a fierce friend regardless of someone's House. He is supportive, cheerful but still pretty low-key. He is very patient, especially with children and younger members of his House. He is very stubborn when he thinks he is right and is sometimes so stubborn that he will refuse to quit even though its obvious that he has lost. Benjy is very determined and is a detail-oriented person but it can sometimes become an obsession for him. He can lose himself in the details and lose sight of the big picture. Its also not uncommon for him to push his health aside to fulfill his determinations. He is also an insomniac and has terrible nightmares.
Benjy sometimes has to be nagged to get things he thinks are unimportant done. He can be a little bit lazy when it comes to his schoolwork. He usually procrastinates because he needs the stress of a deadline to focus. He's pretty intelligent and he can be really creative. His creativity is tempered by a realistic streak- can this work is never far from his mind. Benjy is materialistic in that he likes to collect things and shop, but he is also pretty uptight about money. What this combination makes is a boy that goes out and buys things that make him happy, then he'll feel guilty about it and be a tightwad about money for about a week- until he feels that he has saved enough to justify the splurge. Benjy is sensual, romantic and physically affectionate. He will show his feelings, although sometimes inexperience will get him tongue-tied and he sometimes get a little weird when he's around people he's crushed for. He is very sensitive though. His romantic side also makes him a lover of nature and beauty. He likes animals and plants, and he uses those outlets to get away from the sometimes too-complex nature of people. He takes a lot onto his shoulders and sometimes it affects him.
Benjy has a powerful intuitive side that battles his practical nature. He had to create for himself roots because of the lifestyle he has led. He doesn't always trust his gut, but he probably should. Although it is a latent version of the talent, Benjy has high ratings when it comes to the True Sight.
Hobbies- Benjy collects all sorts of objects that mean the most to him when they're given to him by a friend or that come from a special event in his life. He likes animals and will "pet-sit" for others when they need him to. He also finds spending time in the Greenhouse to be relaxing. He sometimes animal-watches in the safer skirts of the Dark Forest. Benjy loves music- Muggle and Wizard- but he isn't musical himself. He sometimes tries to fake it by singing or playing at a piano but he has no natural talent. He does paint and clay sculpt though, and that is how he gets out his need to be creative. He likes Quidditch but he's a little bit more of a watcher than a player. He's all for a friendly, casual game of it and he is a pretty good Keeper, but he's not into the pressure or prestige of a House team.
Benjy has a Muggle spiritual side and people are a little surprised to learn that he has a lot of interest in Hinduism and Buddhism. Its because of where he grew up in Swansea- in the primarily Indian ghettos- as well as his nomadic Hippy lifestyle before Hogwarts. He was always a little new age despite being practical. He likes it because those religions preach tolerance. He has a very strong sense of guilt that keeps him honest and an even stronger sense of what is right or wrong. He is very willing to fight for what he thinks is right.
Likes- Benjy's a big fan of spicy foods. He likes Indian food the most- Vindaloos, Mahknis, and Masalas. His favorite drink is Earl Grey tea, with milk and sugar. He also likes Chai. Benjy's a Caerphilly Catapults fan, but he also follows the New Dehli Nagas- an Indian team. Benjy's probably gay or at the least bisexual. He's a little bit into the whole Glam Rock culture of Britain, that embraces it as a fad. He's not so open about that he flaunts it, but he will be honest if asked. Its not something he will just discuss though. He doesn't kiss and tell very often. On people he is most interested in their eyes and hands. He likes Astronomy, Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures and Divinations.
Dislikes- "Foods based on a dare"- like Haggis, and he hates most forms of link sausage. He's not adventurous with food. Benjy is a creature of habit and tradition, so he doens't much like change. He dislikes not having money because he is a little materialistic and likes to collect things. He is frugal, but he also likes to replace anything that he deems as "rubbish." He dislikes Arithmancy and Ancient Runes, and he is not naturally inclined towards Potions. Its a real struggle for him.
Boggart- Benjy's Boggart is Banshee-like, except it has vacant voids for eyes. It indicates that he is afraid of dying/death and has a secondary fear of creepy eyes.
Beliefs in... Religion: Most religions scare Benjy because he sees them as hypocritical, cookie-cutter and blind. He does follow one or two loosely though. Love at First Sight: He hopes so... though he has not experienced it. Premarital Relations: Hey, he is a hippie. Free love, right? Actually its not as simple as that for him. Drugs: Again... he is a hippie-raised. He's pretty open minded... and he does enjoy Herbology. Homosexuality: He is. He finds the idea of solace with another man and the similarity of what they are to be incredibly comforting.
Zodiac Sign- Benjy's a Taurus.
Detailed History
Family- Jane Fenwick: His biological mother and a Muggle who died in childbirth with his little brother. He was 3 at the time.
Walter Fenwick: Muggleborn exotic antiques trader and gallery owner. He is a free spirit type that clung to the sixties and its free love. He converted to Buddhism, at least superficially, and became a vegetarian. He's a raging Beattle-maniac and likes to spend a lot of time in The Orient. He used to be a schoolteacher.
Ashwariya Fenwick: This is Benjy's stepmother, a woman of Indian descent that Walter met while on one of his adventures. The two fell in love in an opium den of all places. In a complete sense of abandoning convention, Walter asked her to marry him after knowing her for two weeks. But, they've been together ever since! She is more responsible than Walter, but is still pretty hippie free-love. Ashwariya is a Squib, and was able to convince Walter with some nudging that he wasn't just tripping over Benjy's Hogwarts letter. Benjy just found out a week ago that she is pregnant.
Terrence Fenwick: Terrence is a Muggle and he and Benjy don't get on. Theres always tension between them. Benjy took the middle track between being new age and grounded, and Terrence went rebleiious against it all. Benjy also somewhat unfairly blames Terrence for "killing mom." Its something benjy knows he shouldn't feel, but it still comes up when the two boys are so furious and fighting that they want to hurt each other. Terrence is jealous of Benjy's magical talent, but also wants nothing to do with it.
Stephen & Beverly Goodier: Although not family strictly speaking, they are close family friends and Benjy's and Terrence's second home. They stayed at the Goodier's whenever Walter and later Ashwariya went to Asia and couldn't take their children.
Early Life- Benjy was born in the Welsh port industrial town of Swansea to a pair of Muggle schoolteachers who sort of let life move at a fast pace around them. Both yearned for more, but neither had the courage to live it initially. Their child Benjy was a blessing to them- they had miscarried a baby daughter only a year and a half before. Unfortunately, Jane would die in childbirth from Toxemia. Benjy only vaguely remembers his mother. He recalls certain smells- a flower, a feel of fabric, a warm touch and a voice. There are times he can't picture her face, though. But he loved her... loved her enough to take sibling rivalry between brothers from the fairly ordinary and misplace blame for her death on Terrence.
Walter took Jane's death as a sign. He had survivor's guilt but rather than becoming born-again, he became the free-spirit that he always wanted to be. He changed jobs and for awhile the boys, their father and their aunt lives in squalor. Benjy remembers that as a hard time. Walter became wrapped up in the growing Hippie movements and he and his boys started hopping Hippie Conclaves through Wales and Southeast England. Living the "gypsy lifestyle" of no roots was very hard on Benjy, and it never really changed. His life would be forever a nomadic one, and he craves roots.
Benjy made friends when he could, but most of them were alot older than he was. Other times he was in a reversed role and was more of a babysitter than a friend. The family pulled together and remained tight because it was all they really had. Benjy still disliked Terrence as only rivalling brothers would. There was love there, with competition. Benjy hated being the older brother.
Walter stated that the family was going to India for a few months, after Walter strode into their tent one day decked out in full, traditional Indian dress. That was a little more than Benjy could handle, but he had no choice. The family moved nomadically through the Indus and Ganges valleys, and on towards Calcutta. All Benjy really remembers are the people- so many people that he thought he would drown. And the poverty was just so striking. He was in culture shock when at the tender ages of eight and nine, he saw no less than a dozen dead people on the street. It scared the hell out of him and created a sense of injustice.
Benjy was always "a little weird," like many Muggleborn wizards that have magical potential but no outlet. His manifestations leaned towards prophetic dreams and swearing that sometimes he could spirits. Nobody noticed him as being strange because of the environment that he grew up in. The first man to notice was an old Yogi that Benjy accidentally stumbled in on when he was lost on the streets of Calcutta. Benjy remembered the man well because he came out of his trance, looked at the boy, smiled and said in a thick, high-voiced accent, "Your time is coming."
Along that same time, Walter was meeting a new woman who he would marry- an exotic Indian woman named Ashwariya. They met in an opium den of all places. Over the next few weeks as the family wrapped up their time in India and were set to head back to Wales, Walter walked in and announced he was engaged. Terrence freaked, Benjy stayed strangely quiet. Both were in a hastily performed Hindu ceremony before they returned to Swansea. The family immediately pulled up roots yet again, and moved to the Indian section of town. There, their lives became as British as it was Indian. Benjy learned to embrace both, Terrence counted the days that he could leave. He and Benjy's rivalry started to appear again.
Two years later, and Benjy got a very strange letter that Walter assumed was some kind of joke from his Hippie friends. Ashwariya knew what it was, though. Her sisters had gotten similar letters when they were of age. It was a long and exciting night for Benjy, and was also the moment that he and Terrence would part from being civil with each other. Terrence was both jealous, and angered that another part of his family was freakish.
Hogwarts Life- Benjy's ride on the Hogwarts Express was an eye-opener to what he always hoped might exist. He didn't recall the Yogi until well into his first term. Some people thought he was a bit strange when he saw strange black horse-like things on the carriages for the other students when no one else could see them. He happened to ask a Professor, "What are those," and didn't get a reply until much later.
Benjy was easy to sort. The Sorting Hat barely touched his hair before it belted out, GRYFFINDOR! Benjy was excited and joined his House, and he has been a steady, reliable but low-key figure in it ever since. He has never asked for eternal glory. He proved to be a decent Keeper and flyer, but he never asked to be on the Quidditch Team. He was good at the classes that he enjoyed but was always fairly average in the rest. He was marked early on as an underachiever. He's never had detention or even been held after class in his life though. He was the type of student that tried to make younger years feel welcome, but he never tried to make them follow his advice. Inwardly, being called a Mudblood hurt Benjy, just as being labeled as a "Transient" in the Muggle world bothered him some. He deals with it with his own unique charm and wit.
Last year was probably Benjy's toughtest, as he was forced to really deal with what he wanted to do with his schooling. Auror really started to mean something to him... he could protect people and right injustice with it. He hasn't been able to quite understand the facet that he could be called upon to end a life. That thought has him turning inward some this year, as he tries to reconcile how he feels about that. Inwardly he doubts that he can make it as an Auror, although part of him is really pushing to try. Up until this point, he has been taking classes that interest him as a hobby, or because he was very curious about them. Now he has to decide on what classes get him a career.
Benjy and Terrence had a big blow-up during the summer between 5th and 6th term and have not spoken since. |
